ICARD — The opening varsity football game in the Catawba Valley 2A Athletic between Maiden and East Burke — scheduled Friday in Icard — has been postponed.

East Burke athletic officials announced by e-mail late Tuesday afternoon the game won’t be played. The schools will discuss if they can try to reschedule the league game.

The East Burke at Maiden junior varsity game, scheduled Thursday at 7 p.m., will be played.

Maiden (3-0) had games scheduled last Friday at St. Stephens and then at Monroe cancelled by COVID. The Blue Devils eventually played Christ School in Maiden, winning 27-21 in overtime.

East Burke (1-1) beat Patton on opening night (Aug. 20) and fell 13-12 to Freedom on Aug. 27 in Icard. Since then, the Cavs have cancelled a game at Draughn.

If the Blue Devils don’t end up playing Friday, their next game will be Sept. 24 at West Lincoln. If the Cavs don’t play Friday, their next game is scheduled Sept. 24 at Bandys.

Junior varsity football

Freedom and Newton-Conover announced they will play a junior varsity game on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Newton.

The Patriots (0-1) have played only one JV game, losing 24-6 to East Burke, and the Red Devils are 1-0 after beating Wilkes Central 12-0.

Newton-Conover was scheduled to face West Caldwell in Newton to open the Catawba Valley 2A Athletic scheduled but that game has been cancelled.

— St. Stephens will play its first junior varsity game of the year Thursday night at Bunker Hill (3-0).

The Indians were originally scheduled to be at home against West Iredell but the Warriors are not fielding a JV team, while Bunker Hill was scheduled to play Lincolnton in Claremont.

Bunker Hill athletic officials said the Lincolnton game is postponed and not likely to be rescheduled.
