HUDSON – Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI) has a new head coach for women’s basketball, hiring former Black Mountain Owen High coach Anderson Bynum.

Bynum replaces Richie Covington, who resigned to enter private business.

“Coach Bynum came highly recommended to us from several sources,” CCC&TI interim Athletics Director Jeff Link said in a press release. “When we first spoke, his excitement about returning as a head coach at the collegiate level really stood out.

“Richie got our program on solid footing. Anderson has the plans and desire to take us to the next level to complete for Region 10 and district championships.”

Bynum served as interim men’s head coach at Clinton College in the 2018-19 season and his team went 20-12 and played in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament.

He spent three seasons at Clinton before being named interim head coach, also working as an assistant athletic director there.

Bynum’s coaching experience also includes being head coach at Virginia University in Lynchburg (Va.), an assistant’s job at Patrick Henry College and stints at Spotsylvania (Va.) High, Charis Prep in Wilson and Combine Academy in Charlotte.

Bynum also worked at North Carolina Central as a manager/operations played basketball at Methodist College.

“I am ecstatic about the opportunity that has presented itself at Caldwell,” Bynum said in the press release. “I have admired the program and imagined Caldwell being a place I would eventually like to coach.

“Coach Covington did an excellent job rebuilding the program … and it is a premier coaching job to accept.”

Covington was named CCC&TI’s head coach in 2017 and spent one season of recruiting before the Cobras began play in 2018-19 and went 17-8.

CCC&TI is 35-17 in two seasons with two runner-up finishes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Region X.
