BOONE – Appalachian State’s softball program picked up nine recruits on Wednesday, including high school stars from Bunker Hill and East Lincoln.

In a release posted at its website, Appalachian State announced its recruiting class includes shortstop Addie Wray of Bunker Hill and Katelynn Crowe of East Lincoln.

“I am always excited for this day for these young women and our softball program here at App State,” Mountaineers head coach Shelly Hoerner said in the release. “Signing Day is something everyone longs for.

“This 2021 class has a bright future ahead of them. They are very competitive, have played against some top programs and bring a winning mentality.

“”The versatility of this class will gel great with the strong returning players we will have for the 2022 season.

“I look forward to these individuals making an impact on and off the field during their time in Boone.”

Wray, also a basketball star at Bunker Hill, is an all-conference and all-district player and was 2019’s Northwestern Foothills 2A Player of the Year.

She hit .476 and had a fielding percentage of .982 as a sophomore and hit .344 with a .970 fielding percentage two years ago when Bunker Hill reach the West Regional finals.

Her season last year was cut short by COVID.

Wray played travel ball with the Bandits NC on the 18U National Team in the USA Gold Nationals in 2020, the only high school player on the roster. She was also a member of the Firecrackers NC.

Crowe was All-South Fork 2A, all-region and all-state as a freshman and sophomore for East Lincoln.

She holds the school record for career home runs and was the Mustangs’ Offensive MVP as a freshman and her team’s Defensive MVP as a sophomore.

Crowe has a career batting average of .506 with 60 RBIs, 18 doubles, three triples and 16 home runs.

She was named the 2021 Hot Stove Greater Charlotte Rising Star and plays travel ball for Team North Carolina, which advanced to the TCS Nationals in 2018 and the state tournament in 2017-18.

Crowe also plays for Firecrackers NC.

Wray and Crowe will join an Appalachian State team that went 13-9 and that team included these players from local conferences: Outfielder Gabby Burato of Draughn, pitcher Sydney Holland of West Iredell and infielder Sidney Russell of North Lincoln. All three are now seniors.

The Mountaineers have not yet posted their 2021 softball schedule.
