HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Worthy’s prep head coach dead at age 88

GASTONIA — Larry Rhodes, the head coach NBA great James Worthy played for at Ashbrook High, has died at the age of 88.

Greater Hickory area fans should remember Rhodes from Ashbrook’s days of playing in the Old Western 4A and some of the Green Wave’s epic battles with Hickory.

The conference also included Hunter Huss and another future NBA player, Sleepy Floyd.
