BOONE – Former Bandys High star Madi Story and her buddy from the class Appalachian State recruited for women’s basketball four years ago are going out in style.

Story and Katelyn Doub of Asheboro, now seniors, have been named captains for the Mountaineers’ women’s basketball team for the 2017-18 season, a release on the school’s athletic website said.

“They’ve shown leadership throughout this past year and it continued through a very productive spring and summer for our team,” Appalachian State head coach Angel Elderkin said in the story. “They represent what is special about our culture, our program, and Appalachian State University.”

Story, a 5-foot-10 guard, had her best year last season as a junior, leading the Mountaineers in scoring (13.3 points per game) rebounding (6.9) and 3-pointers made with 38. Her 2.5 assists per game were second for Appalachian State last season.

She was selected third-team All-Sun Belt last season after scoring 20 or more points in seven games, and she led all guards in the league with five double-doubles and had a 31-point game that was third-best in the conference.

There are eight newcomers at Appalachian State this season, and Story recognizes she’ll have to lead by example.

“It’s an honor to be named team captain and be in the position to lead this special group of women,” Story said in the story. “As a captain, I will strive every day to live out my role through my actions rather than my words alone.

“With so many new players on the team this year, it’s vital that we are aligned as one unit, but that will only happen if everyone understands her role and fulfills it to the best of her ability.

“Like Coach Angel stresses, the team is much more important than a few individuals.

“With so much talent on our roster this year, I’m confident we will do big things if we all rise to our full potential.”

Despite missing games due to injuries last season, Doub has fought through adversity and worked to get healthy in the offseason in time for the upcoming season.

She scored a career-high seven points in her first career start against UL Monroe when the Mountaineers had a thin lineup. She could be a threat to hit the long ball and stretch the floor for the Mountaineers, as half of her made field goals are from beyond the arc.

“I am just extremely honored that our coaching staff has selected Madi and I as captains,” Doub said in the story. “We both have been working really hard this summer in leading and setting examples for our returners and our new players on and off the court.

“As a leader to me, it’s more about serving your teammates and making sacrifices for one another.

“I definitely expect and feel as if each member of the team is a leader in their own special way. I am very excited about the season and to prove to everyone that we are the hardest working team.”
