LEGION SOFTBALL: Hickory’s Junior team hands Concord first loss of season

CONCORD – Hickory Post 48’s Junior American Legion softball team picked up a big win on Wednesday night, handing Concord Post 51 its first loss of the season in the second game of a doubleheader at Central Cabarrus High.

After falling 4-0 in the first game, Post 48 won the second game 4-0 behind Mayson Lail, who threw a two-hitter over five innings and hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning.

Lail struck out eight as Post 48 improved to 12-3. She had two hits and Macey Pennell added a hit.

Concord 4, Hickory 0 (first game)

Pennell and Kayla Hollard each had a hit and Kensley Southers walked twice for Hickory in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Laura Drum pitched two innings, allowing one hit, striking out two and allowing four runs. Reliever Owyen Lyall struck out two as she pitched two scoreless innings.

Hickory 18, South Gaston 3 (Tuesday)

Riley Fox allowed no hits and no runs over two innings, leading Hickory past South Gaston at Bandys High.

Lyall pitched in relief for Hickory, throwing an inning in which she gave up three runs and one hit.

Lail and Tori Centers each had two hits for Hickory, and Raegan Howard had a three-run double in the first inning.

Hickory 10, South Gaston 0 (Tuesday)

Centers had a two-run double and Lyall added a single that scored two runs in the fourth inning to lead Post 48.

Lail pitched two innings, struck out three and did not allow a hit. Drum gave up one hit and struck out six during three innings of relief.
