LEGION BASEBALL: Taylorsville rallies to beat Burke County, stay unbeaten

Taylorsville Post 170 wiped out a two-run deficit with six runs in its last two at-bats on Tuesday night to beat visiting Burke County 6-3 and stay unbeaten in Area IV American Legion baseball.

Kyler Fairchild, Tyler Campbell, Daniel Dessecker and Jeremy Hubbard each provided an RBI as Taylorsville (8-0-1, 8-0), playing at Alexander Central High, won after trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning.

Post 170 cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and won via a five-run eighth inning.

Taylorsville starter Grant Strader and relievers Trae Starnes and Campbell combined to limit Burke County to four hits.

Sydney Pike, Ty Causby and Ryan Murdock each had an RBI for Burke County.

No player had more than one hit in Tuesday night’s game.

Tripp Causby started for Post 21 and went seven innings. He gave up six hits, one run (earned), walked none and struck out 11.

Kross Robinson didn’t get an out after coming on in relief in the eighth inning, giving up two runs (both earned) with two walks.

Matt Smith relieved Robinson and got one out. He gave up a hit, three runs (one earned) and walked two before Troy Shepherd finished up by getting two outs for Post 21.

Strader went 4 2/3 innings for Taylorsville, allowing three hits, three runs (all earned) with two walks. Starnes relieved him and pitched 1 1/3 innings (one hit, one walk, three strikeouts).

Campbell (3-0) worked the final three innings, holding Burke County without a hit or run, and struck out four.

Taylorsville has five games left this week – on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Caldwell County at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls, on Friday at home against Henderson County (doubleheader, 5 p.m. start), at home Saturday at 7 p.m. against Cherryville and at Rutherford County at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Burke County (5-6) faces Asheville at Shuey Field in Morganton on Wednesday at 7 p.m., goes to Cherryville on Friday (7 p.m. at Cherryville High) and plays Saturday at 7 p.m. versus Caldwell County at M.S. Deal Stadium.

Henderson County 3-12, Hickory 2-11: Henderson County swept visiting Hickory 3-2 and 12-11 on Tuesday night at East Henderson High, leaving Post 48’s record at 5-11.

Henderson County won the opener on a walk-off single after scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Hayden McGraw had an RBI for Post 48 and Taiven Canipe scored both runs.

Austin Houser, throwing 101 pitches for Hickory, took the loss.

In the second game, Canipe and Joel Gosda sparked Post 48 to a 5-0 led with home runs before Henderson County scored 12 unanswered runs.

Post 48 scored six runs over the fifth and sixth innings and left the tying run at third base in the sixth inning.

Hickory is at home on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., facing Wilmington, plays at home Friday at 7 p.m. against Rutherford County and has a doubleheader on Saturday at home (2 p.m.) start against Asheville.

Maiden falls twice: At Maiden High, Post 240 fell 22-1 to the Gaston Braves and 9-8 to Lincoln County in the completion of a game that was suspended over the weekend tied at 4.

Maiden is 4-9 heading into an away game on Thursday versus Mint Hill (at Independence High, 7 p.m.) and plays a doubleheader on Sunday at 5 p.m. against Gastonia at Sims Park in Gastonia.
