LEGION BASEBALL: Taylorsville nips Caldwell on walk-off passed ball

TAYLORSVILLE — A walk-off passed ball carried Taylorsville past visiting Caldwell County 9-8 on Monday night in American Legion baseball.

Post 170 (2-0) won after having Post 29 down 5-2 through three innings and 8-4 heading into the seventh inning. Caldwell County scored two runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth inning for an 8-all tie.

There were two outs and two runners were left on base when the passed ball allowed the game-winning run to score.

Both teams had 11 hits with Matt Wilkinson, hitting third in the Post 170 lineup, going 4-for-5 and driving in four runs. He also hit a home run.

Tyler Campbell added two hits and Rhyne Johnson drove in two runs for Taylorsville, which scored four runs in the second inning to open a 5-1 lead.

Leadoff hitter Garrison Burress, Brett Macchia, Luke Hensley and Cy Smith each had two hits for Caldwell County (2-1). Macchia hit a home run and drove in two runs and Smith had three RBIs.

Post 29 left 15 runners on base and Taylorsville left 11 stranded.

Johnson pitched one inning as the fifth Post 170 pitcher to gain a win. Taylorsville starter Trae Starnes pitched four innings, allowing four hits, three runs (all earned) with five walks and nine strikeouts.

Owen Foxx, the second of three pitchers used by Caldwell County, took the loss. He threw five innings in relief of Brandon Sisk (three innings, five hits, six earned runs, four walks, three strikeouts) and gave up five hits, three runs (all earned) with four walks and three strikeouts.

Taylorsville’s game scheduled at Shelby on Tuesday night has been cancelled. Post 170’s next game is now set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Lenoir Oilers.

Caldwell County’s next game is Thursday at 7 p.m. against Hickory at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton.

Rain out: Monday night’s Rowan County at Hickory game was not played because of rain.

No makeup date has been set.

Hickory has played just three of the eight games on its original schedule. Games at Burke County, at Mooresville and at Maiden were rained out, Monday’s game was washed out and Wednesday’s home game against Rutherford County was postponed until June 23.

The game against Burke County at Shuey Field in Morganton has been reset for June 8.
