NEWTON –Facing both elimination and a 20th loss of the season, Hickory Post 48 rallied to beat the Gaston Braves 7-6 on Monday night and stay alive in the Area IV American Legion baseball playoff.
Hickory (11-19) plays Game 4 of a best-of-5 series on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Belmont Abbey College.
The Braves (12-10) – who leads two games to one — needs a win to avoid a Game 5 on Wednesday night, which would be played at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton at 7 p.m.
The series winner faces Shelby (21-1), the East No. 1 seed, in a second round best-of-5 that is scheduled to begin on Friday night. Shelby beat Taylorsville 4-1 on Monday night at Shelby High, completing a sweep.
Gaston, the East No. 5 seed, grabbed an early 4-0 lead at Henkel-Alley Field before Post 48, the West No. 4 seed, cut the edge in half with two runs in the third inning.
After two walks, Bryce Stober (Hickory High) drove in a run and another run scored on a throwing error to make it 4-2.
Hickory scored five runs in the fourth inning to gain a 7-4 lead. Jacob Fuller (Hickory) doubled in a run, a throwing error scored a run, Eli Moser (Bunker Hill) drove in a run and Seth Moore (Bunker Hill) drove in two runs for Hickory.
A run-scoring hit by Jason Maggs pulled the Braves within 7-5 in the sixth inning, and they closed within a run when Dosi Jones homered in the seventh inning.
Carrington Chapman (Bunker Hill) retired Gaston 1-2-3 in the seventh inning to lock up a victory, Post 48’s second in its last 12 games.
After dropping six straight games, Hickory beat Burke County 3-2 at the Fairgrounds on July 1 before losses to Cherryville and Caldwell County to close the regular season. The Braves won 8-0 and 5-4 in the first two games of the current series.

The Braves scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning at Belmont Abbey College to win Game 2 of the series.
Pierson Hanvey (Hickory) took the loss in relief of Riley Edwards (St. Stephens) while Bryson Smith (Bunker Hill) scored twice and had three hits for Post 48.
