Next home game for Hickory is June 27 against Burke County



NEWTON – Cleveland County scored four runs in the seventh inning on Friday night — a rally that wiped out Hickory Post 48’s lead – and won an American Legion baseball game 5-2 at Henkel-Alley Field.

The loss, the second straight after having won three of the previous four games, dropped Post 48 to 5-9 overall and 2-8 in Area IV West play.

Hickory’s next game is Sunday at 7 p.m. at Rutherford County. Post 48 then has a game on June 25 at Asheville and home games on June 26 (Burke County) and June 27 (Rutherford County) to close the regular season.

On Friday night, Hickory outhit Cleveland County 6-3 but lost.

Cleveland County scored a run in the first inning, and Hickory grabbed a 2-1 lead with two runs in the sixth inning.

All of Post 48’s hits were singles, and Josh Barkley (St. Stephens) and Aidan Landrum (Fred T. Foard) each drove in a run.

Tyler Smart had two hits for Cleveland County and drove in a run and Cole Drewery and Jackson Ledbetter also drove in a run each.

Cleveland County coaxed seven walks out of three Post 48 pitchers, with reliever Isaiah McDowell taking a loss. He pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one hit, four runs (all earned) and walked three.

Hickory starter Luke Davis (Hickory) worked six innings, allowing three hits, one run (earned), walking four and striking out one. Landrum pitched the final two-thirds on an inning for Post 48, allowing one hit.

Isaiah Lowe started for Cleveland County and went two innings (three strikeouts). Colby Humphries then pitched four innings, allowing six hits, two runs (both earned), walking one and striking out four. Zac Flontek walked one and struck out two in the seventh inning for Cleveland County.

Cherryville 8, Hickory 2

Visiting Cherryville had an 8-0 lead when Hickory got its only runs in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday night in Newton.

Kenon Willis, Joseph Webb, Jacob Hamrick and Collin Robinson each had two hits for Cherryville, which had nine. Webb hit a home run and drove in three runs.

McDowell had three of Hickory’s six hits and drove in a run and Barkley added an RBI.

Will Blackburn threw six innings for Cherryville, allowing three hits, no runs, walked five and striking out nine (100 pitches). Willis pitched the seventh inning for Cherryville, giving up three hits, two runs (both earned), walking one and striking out one.

For Hickory, Elijah Miller (Maiden) was the starter. He gave up two hits, three runs (one earned) with one walk and two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings.
