LEGION BASEBALL: McDowell drives in 5 runs as Hickory nips Statesville

Post 48 at home Friday night for doubleheader against Hendersonville

NEWTON – Isaiah McDowell had a big night for Hickory Post 48 on Wednesday night with four hits and driving in five runs in an 11-8 home victory over Statesville in American Legion baseball.

Post 48 (3-6, -5 Area IV West) snapped a three-game losing streak, collecting 13 hits.

Hickory jumped to leads of 3-0, 3-2, 7-2 and 9-2 in the first four innings.

The next games for Post 48 are Friday, a doubleheader against Hendersonville with a 5 p.m. start at Henkel-Alley Field.

Post 48 has three games next week – at home Monday night against Caldwell County, at Cherryville on Tuesday night and at home against Shelby next Friday.

Hickory beat Statesville for the second time this season with a mixture of hitting and pitching from players from different high schools on head coach Allen Sigmon’s roster.

McDowell, who doubled three times, plays prep baseball for Hickory. Justin Skewes (St. Stephens) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Newton-Conover’s Zane Wilson and Hayden Tabor of Fred T. Foard each added two hits.

Hickory’s starting pitcher, Hollis Morphis (Hickory Christian Academy) went four innings, allowing five hit, three runs (two earned) with one walked and four strikeouts.

Jack McGhinnis (Hickory) threw 1 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, three runs (one earned. He walked one and struck out two.

Fred T. Foard’s Aiden Landrum pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for Post 48, allowing no hits, an unearned run with one walk and one strikeout.

Kohen Eldreth had three of Statesville’s seven hits and Noah Berrier had two hits and drove in two runs.

Statesvillle starter Tanner Eckard went 2 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits, nine runs (six earned) with two walks and three strikeouts. Eldreth pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up four hits, two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out one.
