NEWTON – For the fifth time this season, Hickory Post 48 failed to hold a late lead in American Legion baseball.

Post 48 was ahead of visiting Lincoln County by three runs after three innings and up by a run after five innings before the Cardinals rallied at the Legion Fairgrounds to win a seven-inning game 9-4.

Kenny Schild picked up a pitching win for Lincoln County while Alex Borst took the loss for Post 48, which used five pitchers.

Hickory is now 4-7 after picking up two forfeit wins from Haywood County, which joined Huntersville last week in dropping out of the rest of the Area IV schedule.

Thursday night’s loss after leading late was the fifth time that has happened to Post 48 this season; the others were at Caldwell County, at Randolph County, at Cherryville and a home game against Taylorsville.

Hickory was scheduled to play a home doubleheader against Haywood County on June 28.

Post 48 has three games over the next two days, starting with a 7 p.m. game against Cherryville at Henkel-Alley Field on Friday night.

On Saturday, Post 48 plays two games at the Fairgrounds, facing Maiden at 1 p.m. and Shelby at 4 p.m.

Lincoln County is scheduled to Union County at 7 p.m. on Saturday at East Lincoln High and then plays Sunday at 7 p.m. at Maiden (Maiden High).

The Cardinals picked up a forfeit win from Huntersville (June 19 game at East Lincoln).
