GRANITE FALLS – Hickory Post 48 needs a victory on the Fourth of July to earn a first-round home playoff game in American Legion baseball.

Post 48 (11-16, 7-8) visits old rival Caldwell County Post 29 (11-7, 9-6) for a 7 p.m. game at M.S. Deal Stadium.

While Post 29 knows it will finish third behind Rutherford County and Cherryville in the Area IV West Division standings regardless of the outcome, Post 48 is battling Asheville Post 70 (7-8) for a fourth-place finish, and Burke County could play its way into the mix.

The Area IV regular season ends Thursday and pairings for the first round of the postseason will be determined at a Friday night meeting. The playoffs begin on Saturday.

Hickory and Asheville are each 7-8 in the West, with Asheville – after picking up a forfeit win over Taylorsville – facing Cherryville on the road on Thursday night.

Should Hickory and Asheville win their regular season finales and close at 8-8, Asheville would gain the No. 4 seed by having gone 1-1 against second-place Cherryville, which swept Hickory.

If Hickory and Asheville each lose and Burke County beats Taylorsville on Thursday night at Shuey Field in Morganton, there would be a three-way tie (at 7-9). Comparative records between Hickory, Asheville and Burke County are all 2-2, forcing some kind of tiebreaker in the meeting on Friday night.
