Hickory (11-15, 7-7) rallied to win at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton after Post 21 (6-9, 6-8) had an early 2-0 edge.

Post 48 scored two runs in the fifth inning, when it had three hits, and broke a tie in the sixth inning when Kevin Shuford (Hickory High) singled to score Hanvey (Hickory).

Burke County scored in the first inning when Brycen Seymore (McDowell) singled in Nate Watkins (McDowell), who had singled.

Ryan Murdoch (McDowell) singled and advanced on two wild pitches and scored in the second inning for a 2-0 lead by Post 21.

Hickory won after chasing Seymore, picking up the game-winning hit off reliever Josh Maddox (McDowell).

Post 48 came into Sunday’s game — which began 90 minutes earlier than the original 7 p.m. start time due to a forecast for rain – tied for fourth place in the Area IV West standings with Burke County and Asheville.

Hickory has a non-division game on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Fairgrounds against Cherryville and closes the regular season on Wednesday at 7 p.m., facing Caldwell County at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls.

Burke County has two games left on its regular season schedule, Tuesday at East Division champion Rutherford County (7 p.m.), and Thursday at 7 p.m. against Taylorsville at Alexander Central High.

The Area IV schedule continues through Thursday night with pairings for the first round to be set on Friday night in a league meeting. The postseason begins on Saturday night.
