LEGION BASEBALL: Caldwell County rides 5-run inning to win over Hickory

GRANITE FALLS – Caldwell County Post 29 broke a tie with a five-run sixth inning on Sunday night to nip visiting Hickory 9-5 in American Legion baseball.

The Area IV game at M.S. Deal Stadium was tied at 4 after Post 48 scored a run in the top of the fifth inning.

Caldwell took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and Hickory scored runs in the third and fourth innings for a 2-all tie.

A run in the fifth inning gained Post 48 a one-run lead that Caldwell wiped out with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-3 lead.

Hickory (1-2) scored a run in the top of the fifth inning for a 4-all tie.

Caldwell had eight hits, two each from Isiah Kirby, Coby McCall and C.J. Cook. Cook drove in three runs and McCall, batting third in the order, drove in two.

Henry Stewart and Zane Wilson each had two of Hickory’s nine hits with Boone Herman, Silas Isenhour, Stewart and Wilson each driving in a run.

Hickory made four errors and Caldwell had two.

Tate Jensen threw three innings in relief for Post 29, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned), walking three and striking out three. Ryan Fox started for Post 29 and lasted 3 1/3 innings (four hits, one walk and two strikeouts). Fox gave up two runs, none earned.

Josh Barkley, Post 48’s starter, went five innings. He gave up six hits, six runs (four earned) with two walks and three strikeouts. Stewart Simmons threw one inning for Hickory allowing two hits, three runs (none earned) and walking one and striking out one.

Hickory left 10 baserunners stranded and Pot 29 left six on base.

Post 48’s next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the road, facing Burke County at Shuey Field Post 48 has added two games — at Gastonia on Wednesday (Sims Park) and home on Thursday against Mooresville and then plays Cherryville on Friday (7 p.m.) at Henkel-Alley Field.

Caldwell’s game on Monday at Asheville was postponed until June 6, and Post 29 plays Shelby at home on Wednesday, Statesville on Thursday in Granite Falls, at home Saturday against Cherryville and on Sunday at Henderson County.
