Two area American Legion baseball games scheduled Monday night were wiped out by rain.

The Burke County at Hickory game scheduled at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton was postponed and reset for June 26.

Maiden Post 240’s game against Lincoln County at East Lincoln High was also washed out and will now be played on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The next game for Hickory (1-4) is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Cherryville.

The Monday rainout was the sixth postponed game of the season for Post 48 for reasons varying from bad weather to rescheduling games against Rutherford County due to R-S Central High reaching the state 2A baseball title series.

Maiden, after a 3-0 start, is now 3-3 heading into Tuesday night’s game. The Salamanders are also scheduled to battle Cherryville on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Cherryville High and to play a home Saturday game at 7 p.m. against Mint Hill.

Caldwell County protest upheld: The Lenoir News-Topic is reporting Caldwell County Post 29’s protest of its 15-7 loss to Cherryville in Hudson on Saturday night has been upheld.

The online report said details about when the game will be resumed have not yet been set.

Here’s a condensed account of what led to the protest, as posted on Caldwell County’s website:

Cherryville led 3-2 in the fifth inning and had the bases loaded with no outs when Post 29 manager Myron Day went to the mound for the second time in the inning. Day called to the bullpen for reliever Isaac Bush to replace Post 29 starter Trent Black.

After Bush gave up a run-scoring sacrifice fly to the first batter he faced, he got an out on a ball hit back to him. A Cherryville runner scored from third when a throw home was not made in time, making it 5-2.

When the next batter doubled in run, Day came to the mound to talk to Bush. When Day returned to the dugout, the home plate umpire informed Day he would have to remove Bush from the game.

Day then gave notice he was protesting that decision.

By American Legion rules, the game would resume with two outs in the top of the fifth inning with runners on second and third and Bush pitching.
