NEWTON – Hickory Post 48’s losing streak was extended to five games on Friday night in American Legion baseball at the Legion Fairgrounds.
Waverly (Ohio) clipped Hickory 7-5 in an afternoon game before Taylorsville Post 170 won 9-3 in a nightcap at Henkel-Alley Field to drop Post 48 to 10-14 overall.
Hickory’s skid began with an 8-7 loss at Asheville. After three straight rainouts, Post 48 fell 1-0 and 7-5 in eight innings at Rutherford County.
Post 48 has four games left on its Area IV schedule, all 7 p.m. games – Saturday against Burke County at Shuey Field in Morganton, Sunday at the Fairgrounds against Burke County, Monday at home against Cherryville and Wednesday against Caldwell County at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls.
Taylorsville’s remaining regular-season games – all at 7 p.m. — are Saturday at home against Rutherford County, Sunday at home against Shelby, Monday at Randolph County, Tuesday at home against Asheville and Thursday at Burke County.
The Area IV regular season schedule ends Thursday and pairings for the playoffs, which begin next Saturday, will be determined on Friday.

Post 48 rallied after being behind 7-2 by scoring three runs in the seventh inning, but left the bases loaded.
Bradley Fleenor (Hickory High) led Hickory with two hits while William Stewart (Hickory) took a loss after pitching 4 1/3 innings.
Taylorsville 9, Hickory 3
Taylorsville scored all of its runs over the final three innings to snap a seven-game losing streak as Justin Cook threw a complete game.
Hickory was up 3-0 through the first two innings.
Bryce Stober (Hickory) had a double and triple to spark Post 48, and Eli Moser (Bunker Hill) took the pitching loss.
