PITTSBURGH — Former East Lincoln High star Alec Burleson — playing in his third major league game for the St. Louis Cardinals — got his first hit in a 5-4 victory on Sunday over the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
Burleson was the designated hitter, batting ninth, and he singled to center field in the eighth inning against Pittsburgh reliever Duane Underwood Jr. (Raleigh native, played prep baseball in Marietta, Ga.).
Burleson is 1-for-9 (.111) so far, with an off day on Monday before the Cardinals welcome Milwaukee to town for a series that begins on Tuesday night.
The hit that Burleson will likely remember for a lifetime came in front of 10, 398.
He is wearing No. 41 for St. Louis.
St. Louis promoted Burleson from Triple A Memphis (Tenn.) on Wednesday but he did not get into the game that night against Washington.
Burleson, 23, played 109 games at Memphis this season, hitting 20 home runs, 25 doubles, driving in 87 runs and hitting .331.
In 228 career minor league games, he hit .300 with 42 home runs, 43 doubles and 163 RBIs.
