Newberry College won twice on Saturday to reach 31 wins this season
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College cleared 30 wins for the baseball season by sweeping visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday in a doubleheader, 7-2 and 5-4 in eight innings.
The wins moved the Wolves to 31-19 overall and to 16-8 in the South Atlantic Conference. LRU dropped to 21-26, 6-18.
In the opening game, Newberry collected 15 hits and freshman right-hander Evan Estridge (5-2) checked the Bears on six hits over six innings. He gave up a run (earned) with no walks and six strikeouts.
The Wolves were up 3-1 early and stretched that to 6-1 with a three-run fourth inning.
Daren Olenchuck had two hits and two RBIs to lead Newberry. Robert Kosh went 3-for-4 and Danton Hyman was 3-for-5 and Trejon Smith added three hits.
Garrett Vaughn had two hits for LRU, including his first home run of the season, and Landon Whitson took the loss. Whitson lasted two innings, giving up five hits, three runs (all earned) with one walk and one strikeout.
In the second game, Dayman Totherow went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Olenchuck had two hits to spark Newberry.
LRU had a four-run second inning to lead 4-0 but the Wolves scored four runs in the fourth inning for a 4-all tie.
Alex Reynolds went 3-for-4 and Brandon Lam hit his first home run of the year and drove in four runs for the Bears.
Tomas Sorcia, a freshman, got the win for Newberry as its fifth pitcher and went two innings.
LRU’s Tad Ratliff took the loss in relief.
The Bears close their regular season on Tuesday at 6 p.m. with a non-league game against UNC Pembroke.
