CRAWDADS: Asheville begins series at Hickory with 2-run victory

HICKORY – The Tourists got comfortable on Thursday night and opened a series against the Hickory Crawdads with a 5-3 victory at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Manuel Melendez went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Max George went 3-for-4 in a South Atlantic League (SAL) victory by Asheville (19-26) before a crowd of 1,625.

The series continues on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Game 3 of the series is Saturday at 6 p.m. and the final game is Sunday at 3 p.m. with Kannapolis coming to town on Monday to begin a three-game series.

On Thursday night, Asheville out-hit Hickory 15-7 and wiped out the Crawdads’ 3-1 lead through two innings to win. The Tourists scored four runs in the sixth inning.

Jose Almonte led Hickory (18-29) with two hits and two RBIs. He hit his second home run of the season in the second inning.

Antonio Santos threw six innings and got the win for the Tourists. He gave up seven hits, three runs (all earned) with one walk and five strikeouts. J.D. Hammer pitched a scoreless ninth inning to gain is third save of the year.

Christian Torres, in relief, took the loss for Hickory. He threw three innings, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned.
