CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – For the first time in 15 years, Lenoir-Rhyne University has a female All-American golfer.
Abby Hartsell, who came to LRU after starring at Alexander Central High, was named to the Women’s Golf Association (WGA) NCAA Division II second-team on Wednesday.
She is the first All-American in women’s golf for the Bears since Meghan Jolly was picked in 2002.
Hartsell was the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Player of the Year this season, leading LRU to its first women’s golf title in 13 years. She finished second in the league’s championship tournament.
Two weeks ago, Hartsell played in the NCAA Division II South Super Regionals in Elgin, S.C., where she tied for seventh place.
Hartsell had the best scoring average in the SAC this season (75.8), and her 4-under par 68 in October at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational was the lowest round by a SAC golfer this season.
The Women’s Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women’s collegiate golf coaches.
