MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: CVCC nips Louisburg, picks up 16th victory of season

HICKORY – Balanced scoring led the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) men past visiting Louisburg College 94-86 on Saturday afternoon in a Region X basketball game at the Tarlton Complex.

Zach De La Cruz paced the Red Hawks (16-5, 8-4) with 13 points while Everett Palmer, Brandon Reeves and Sal-Bey Young added 11 points each. Young also recorded eight rebounds.

CVCC sophomore Jordan Powell finished one point shy of his eighth double-double of the season — scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds — and Jahleer Black also scored nine points and added seven rebounds.

The Red Hawks led 45-34 at the half with Palmer scoring 11 first-half points and De La Cruz scoring 10.

Reeves and Powell each scored nine points during the second half for CVCC, which next play on Monday at 7 p.m. to play Davidson County Community College in Thomasville.

CVCC 97, Wake Tech 85 (Wednesday)

Freshman Cole Johnson scored a career-high 22 points in a home victory by the Red Hawks.

In a up-and-down first half that saw CVCC lead by as many as five points and trailed by as many as nine, the Red Hawks led 44-43 at the half.

Byron Sanders scored nine first-half points and Johnson had seven points in the half for CVCC.

Powell recorded his seventh career double-double while Sanders had 18 points.

Tireek Wilder paced Wake Tech (10-9, 9-3) with 18 points.
