MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Bears cruise, score 101 points to start 1-0

HICKORY – Jumping to a 30-point lead, the Lenoir-Rhyne University men cruised in their season-opening game on Friday night.

The Bears rolled 101-72 over visiting Young Harris after leading 41-11 at one point. They scored more than 100 points for the first time since mid-November of 2016.

LRU (1-0) plays Emmanuel on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

The Bears shot 53 percent, including 63.1 percent in the opening half, and they led by as many as 35 points.

Cory Thomas scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting and added six rebounds in just 24 minutes of action.

Filip Leskovar played six minutes and scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds.

The Bears won their first game of the season under Everick Sullivan, starting his third season, for the first time.

LRU outscored the Mountain Lions (0-1) by 60-32 in the paint and had a 16-4 advantage in fast break points.

The Bears have three games next week, playing Tuesday at home against Southern Wesleyan (7 p.m.) and games on Friday and Saturday against Livingstone (5:30 p.m.) and Johnson C. Smith (4 p.m.), respectively.
