JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – A 10-point spurt late in the fourth quarter helped Lander University nip Lenoir-Rhyne University 55-53 as the Bears opened their women’s basketball season.
Playing as part of the two-day Peach Belt/South Atlantic Conference Challenge at Carson-Newman, LRU fell after Lander had a 13-3 run.
The Bears — who play USC Aiken on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the tournament – had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds but didn’t.
Madi Sudderth, a preseason All-SAC pick, provided 17 points to lead LRU.
Junior guard Symone Starks led Lander with 19 points, three rebounds, one block and one steal.
LRU dropped its season-opener for the second straight year.
After Saturday’s game, the Bears will not play again until Nov. 17 at Chowan. Their home opener is Nov. 20 against Newberry in a conference game (5 p.m.).
