COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne opens league tourney on road

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne University will open the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) volleyball tournament on the road as a No. 5 seed on Tuesday, going to No. 4 Carson-Newman.

The Bears tied the Eagles at 11-9 in league play but the Carson-Newman gained the higher seed – and home match at 7 p.m.– with a regular season sweep of LRU.

Wingate, after winning the league title for the 12th time in 13 seasons, is the top seed. The Bulldogs (19-1) open at home Tuesday at 7 p.m., playing No. 8 Catawba.

The tournament semifinals are Friday and Saturday at Coker with the winner earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Division I playoffs.

LRU is paired opposite Wingate-Catawba, and the Bears would be in a semifinal at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Tuesday’s matches, all at 7 p.m.

Game 1: No. 8 Catawba at No. 1 Wingate

Game 2: No. 5 LENOIR-RHYNE at No. 4 Carson-Newman

Game 3: No. 7 Mars Hill at No. 2 Anderson, S.C.

Game 4: No. 6 Queens at No. 3 Lincoln Memorial

Friday’s semifinals at Coker College

Game 5: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, 4 p.m.

Game 6: Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner, 6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s championship at Coker College

Game 7: Semifinals winners, 2 p.m.
