Seniors Kevin Pineda and Njat Tahirli combined for five goals on Saturday night as Hibriten High opened the state 2A boys’ soccer playoffs with an 8-1 victory at home over East Gaston.

The top-seeded Panthers (22-0-2) got three goals from Pineda, who has 42 this season, and two by Tahirli, who has 28 this season.

David Franquiz, Joshua Crisp and Jonas Doll each added a goal for Hibriten, the Northwestern Foothills 2A regular season champion.

Chandler Crisp had two assists for the Panthers, who advance to play No. 16 Lexington (16-7-1) in Lenoir in the second round on Tuesday.

Lexington beat No. 17 Central Davidson 2-0 on Saturday in Lexington to advance.

East Gaston was seeded No. 32.

Hibriten will be at home for the third round on Thursday if it beats Lexington, facing Black Mountain Owen or Forest Hills.

No. 4 Newton-Conover 3, No. 29 Lake Norman Charter 0

The Red Devils, defending state 2A champions, opened the 2A playoffs at home by beating South Fork 2A foe Lake Norman Charter for the third time this season.

Newton-Conover (19-3-1) will be at home Tuesday for a second-round match against No. 13 West Stokes (12-5-3), a 4-0 home first-round winner over No. 20 North Surry.

If Newton-Conover wins again, it will play Thursday in a third round match against Shelby or West Iredell in Newton.

No. 10 East Lincoln 3, No. 23 East Burke 1

Chase Gilley scored twice and his brother, Logan, added a goal and assist as the Mustangs won a first-round 2 match at home.

Ty Knight had an assist for East Lincoln (20-3), which plays at No. 7 seed Wilkes Central (15-4-3) in the second round on Tuesday.

Wilkes Central advanced with a 1-0 home win over No. 26 Winston-Salem Carver.

If East Lincoln wins again, its third round match on Thursday would be against South Point (home) or at Surry Central.

No. 12 West Iredell 2, No. 21 Lincolnton 1

The Warriors reached the second round of the 2A bracket by ousting the Wolves.

West Iredell goes to No. 5 Shelby (17-3-2) on Tuesday.

Shelby advanced by beating No. 28 Ashe County 6-1 in Shelby.

If West Iredell beats Shelby, it would face West Stokes (at West Iredell) or travel to Newton-Conover on the road in the third round on Thursday.

No. 19 Patton 7, No. 14 East Henderson 2

The Panthers (14-9-1) won a first-round 2A match on the road, scoring five times in the second half.

Pierce Memmel had four goals for Patton, giving him 36 for the year, and Richard Sanchez scored twice and Elliott Palacios added a goal.

Patton will play at third-seeded Salisbury (21-2-1) on Tuesday after the Hornets advanced with a 4-2 win over No. 30 West Davidson.

A Patton win would set up a third-round match on Thursday against West Stanly (at Patton) or at North Davidson.

No. 11 North Davidson 2, No. 22 Bandys 0

The Black Knights (18-4-0) got an unassisted goal by Ethan Wilkes and the other goal was an own goal in a first-round 2A match played Thursday at North Davidson.

Bandys finished 10-8-3.

North Davidson faces No. 27 West Stanly (12-6-1) – a 6-5 winner on penalty kicks over No. 6 Hendersonville – on Tuesday the second round in Welcome.

No. 8 Black Mountain Owen 2, No. 24 Fred T. Foard 1

Owen eliminated the Tigers (8-12-3) in the opening round of the state 2A playoffs.

Owen next plays at home on Tuesday, facing No. 9 Forest Hills (11-1-1), a 4-0 winner at home in the first round over No. 24 Forbush.

No. 2 Surry Central 2, No. 31 North Lincoln 0

Surry Central eliminated the visiting Knights in the 2A bracket, advancing to play No. 15 South Point at Surry Central on Tuesday.

South Point won 4-1 over No. 18 Smoky Mountain in Belmont.

3A

No. 5 Watauga 6, No. 28 Hunter Huss 1

Jair Alvarez scored three goals to lead the Pioneers past the Huskies in Boone.

Owen Combs, Jake Ganley and Talib Patrick each added a goal for Watauga (20-5).

The Pioneers’ second-round match on Tuesday, at home, is against No. 12 Concord (17-4-2), a 5-3 winner over West Caldwell in the opening round.

If Watauga wins again, it would play Weddington (in Boone) or at Asheville in the third round on Thursday.

No. 23 Southwest Guilford 3, No. 10 Hickory 1

Visiting Southwest Guilford (11-7-5) stunned the Red Tornadoes in Hickory, advancing to play No. 26 Monroe in the second round on Tuesday at Southwest Guilford.

Monroe advanced by beating No. 7 South Iredell 4-2 on the road.

Hickory — after sharing the Northwestern 3A-4A title with Watauga — finished 15-5-4.

The Red Tornadoes have won at least 15 matches in five consecutive seasons.

No. 12 Concord 5, No. 21 West Caldwell 3

The Spiders (17-4-2) held off the visiting Warriors (15-7-0) after building an early 4-0 lead.

Concord plays at No. 5 Watauga (20-5) on Tuesday in a second round match.

4A

Spartans meet Kell in Round 2

South Caldwell (12-6-3) had a first-round bye and starts its postseason bid on Tuesday in Hudson against No. 10 Kell, a 4-0 winner over No. 23 Richmond County.

The Spartans got the only postseason bid in 4A from the Northwestern 3A-4A.

If South Caldwell wins, its third round match on Thursday would be against Providence (home) or Porter Ridge (away).
