EAST-WEST ALL-STARS BOYS SOCCER: East wins 2-1; N-C’s Tapia scores West’s goal

GREENSBORO – Newton-Conover High’s Francisco Tapia had the only West goal on Tuesday night, but the East won 2-1 behind two goals from Cesar Cruz of Wilmington Hoggard in the annual East-West All-Star boys’ soccer match.

Cruz, named match MVP, opened the scoring at the 11:45 mark, striking from 15 yards on an assist by Jose Aguirre of Lee County.

Tapia, taken down in the box, converted his penalty kick at the 47:20 mark for a 1-all tie.

Cruz scored the deciding goal at the 60:54 mark, converting from about 7 yards away on a rebound of a shot he had taken.

Three West all-stars were from Greater Hickory area conferences, with Santiago Betancourt of Hickory and Jordan Hall of Lake Norman Charter joining Tapia in Greensboro.
