GREENSBORO – Lincoln Charter High’s Kody Shubert made big plays down the stretch – including a game-winning drive down the middle of the lane in the final 3 ½ seconds – to push the West past the East 106-104 on Monday night in the East-West All-Star boys’ basketball game.
Playing before a crowd of nearly 3,000, Shubert scored 10 of the West’s final 11 points and finished with 14 to earn MVP honors in his final prep game. A 5-foot-11 guard, he has signed to play college basketball at Presbyterian.
Torey James, a 6-5 forward from Hickory who will play at Ohio University next, added 17 points for West head coach Casey Rogers (Freedom), whose team trailed 58-48 at halftime and led 80-74 heading into the fourth quarter at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Jaylen Alston of Eastern Guilford led the West’s scoring with 20 points, Hunter Tyson of Piedmont scored 19 and Andy Pack of Northern Guilford added 12.
For the East, outscored 32-16 in the third quarter by the West, Dewan Lesesne of Clinton had a game-high 25 points, Kenny Dye of Northside Jacksonville and Ryan Shaffer of Green Hope each added 15, Kenyon Burt of Garner had 14 and Gabe Kirkendoll of Northside Jacksonville scored 11.
Shubert is a second-generation athlete whose father, Mark, played three sports at Bandys High. His uncle, David, was a basketball standout for the Trojans who also coached Fred T. Foard girls’ basketball for six years (110-58 record) and guided the Tigers to a state softball title.
Shubert’s head coach at Lincoln Charter — where he finished with 2,476 career points – is former Bandys star and head coach Brad Gabriel. Shubert played four seasons at Lincoln Charter with the Eagles reaching the West Regionals each year. They won a state 1A title in 2016-2017 and fell to Winston-Salem Prep last season in the West 1A Regional championship game.
