CHAPEL HILL – The top high school athletic programs in two of the state’s four classifications are from a local conference, the South Fork 2A, and from Lincoln County.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) awards – the Wachovia State Cups – have been won by Lake Norman Charter in 2A and by Lincoln Charter in 1A.
Carrboro had won six straight Wachovia State Cups in 2A but was second this school year. North Lincoln, also in the South Fork 2A, finished fourth.
Weddington won the 3A Cup and Green Hope won the 4A Cup.
Lake Norman Charter won its title with a state title in girls’ track and second place finishes in girls’ soccer and boys’ golf.
The Knights also won a state girls’ cross country crown, finished third in boys’ cross country and made the regional finals in dual-team tennis.
Lake Norman Charter’s swim teams helped it become the champion with the girls’ posting the best 2A finish at the state meets and the boys’ having the best 2A finish at the state meet.
Lincoln Charter was second in boys’ golf and boys’ tennis and took third in girls’ soccer and baseball in the 1A race.
In the fall, the Eagles had second-place finishes in girls’ and boys’ cross country.
In the winter, Lincoln Charter’s boys were second in swimming, its girls were fourth in swimming and its boys’ basketball team reached the West Regionals.
