KINGS MOUNTAIN – Maiden Post 240 got seven of its nine hits from the first four batters in its lineup – led by Ty Williams going 4-for-4 – to blank Kings Mountain 5-0 on Monday night in American Legion baseball at Kings Mountain High.
Williams (Berea College) doubled and scored two runs, Josh Frye (Statesville Christian) doubled and drove in two runs, Mac Beam (Bandys) doubled, had two hits and drove in two runs and Taylor Tibbs (Bluefield State) drove in a run to spark the Salamanders.
With those four players combining to go 7-for-14, score four runs and drive in four runs, Maiden improved to 10-3 under head coach David Williams.
Cy Spencer (Bandys), a right-hander, threw a complete game and limited Kings Mountain to four hits. He walked none and struck out eight, posting the third shutout victory of the year by Post 240 pitching. He threw 91 pitches, 66 of them for strikes.
Rickey Wright, Hunter Champion, Daniel Bagwell and Max Lowe had hits for Kings Mountain. Lowe was the losing pitcher, working 6 1/3 innings. He gave up eight hits, five runs (all earned), walked none and struck out five.
Maiden scored a run in the first inning and its other four in the seventh inning.
The Salamanders are on the road Tuesday at 7 p.m., playing Burke County at Shuey Field in Morganton, and they play Mint Hill at Independence High on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
On Friday, Post 240 goes to the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton to play in-county rival Hickory for the second time this season – Maiden won 9-4 at Maiden High on May 31.
Maiden has three home games left on its regular-season schedule, playing Pineville on Monday, Shelby on June 29 and Huntersville on July 4.
The Area IV playoffs are scheduled to begin on July 7.
Henderson County 9, Salamanders 5 (Sunday)
Visiting Henderson County grabbed an early four-run lead and ended up outhitting Maiden 13-11 to hand the Salamanders’ their third loss of the season.
Frye, batting fifth in the order, went 4-for-4 and scored twice for Maiden, which fell behind 4-1 through three innings and was down 6-1 when it scored twice in the fourth inning.
Henderson County led 8-3 when it added two runs in the top of the fifth inning before Maiden got within 8-5 with a two-run fifth inning.
Tyler Laws (Statesville Christian) took the loss for the Salamanders, going 5 2/3 innings. He gave up 12 hits, eight runs (seven earned), walked two and struck out four.
Brantley Durham (Newton-Conover) drove in two runs for Maiden while Tibbs, Grayeson Brown (Maiden) and Spencer each drove in a run.
Salamanders 15, Lincoln County 5, 6 inn. (Saturday)
Ten players had at least one hit, led by three from Dylan Abernathy (Maiden), as Maiden rolled past the Cardinals at Maiden High with 14 hits.
Williams walked three times and drove in a run, Durham drove in four runs, Beam had two hits, Jay Sipe (Maiden) walked twice and drove in three runs and Laws had two RBIs for the Post 240.
Jacob Cauble, the third Salamanders pitcher of the day, got a win after throwing 1 2/3 innings. he gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Kyle Naspinski led the Cardinals with two of their seven hits and he drove in two runs.
Josh Allen took the loss for Lincoln County, going 3 1/3 innings. He gave up eight hits, four runs (all earned), walked three and struck out three.
Lincoln County led 1-0 after one inning and 5-0 in the top of the third but Maiden scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, six in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth inning for a 10-run lead.
