JARRETT

Like he often can, Zach Jarrett got hot at the plate on Friday night.

Again batting second in the batting order for the Norfolk (Va.) Tides, he went 3-for-4 and hit his seventh home run of the season at Memphis but it came in a 6-5 loss.

The series continues through Sunday in Memphis.

Jarrett, starting in centerfield, scored a run and drove in two in the loss on Friday. He hit a solo home run with two outs in the third inning, and it was the 34th of his pro baseball career.

A former star at Hickory High and then in college baseball at Charlotte, Jarrett is  hitting .263 this season with seven home runs and 22 RBIs.

He has been in Triple-A since a promotion from Double-A Bowie (Md.) on May 19, and he has twice been assigned to the Baltimore Orioles during his career (March 2019 and February 2020).

Norfolk is 24-36 and in seventh place (last) in the Triple-A East Southeast Division,  a half-game behind sixth place Charlotte and 17 games behind division-leading Durham.

Five of the six teams trailing Durham are at least nine games behind.

Jarrett was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2017 and taken in the 28th round.

The Tides will return to Charlotte for a six-game series from Aug. 17-22.
