Zach Jarrett had a big game close to home on Wednesday night.
Jarrett, a former Hickory High and Charlotte star, hit a first-inning home run and had three hits for Norfolk (Va.) in a 7-4 loss at Charlotte before 4,916.
He started in centerfield and again batted third in the Tides lineup, scoring two runs and raising his batting average to .293.
Jarrett’s two-out solo home run gave Norfolk an early 1-0 lead.
Game 3 of a six-game series continues on Thursday at 7:04 p.m.
Norfolk is 20-27 and in fifth place in the Triple-A East Southern Division, 11 games back of division-leading Durham.
Charlotte is 20-28 and in sixth place, 11 1/2 games behind Durham.
Games times through Saturday are 7:04 p.m., and Sunday’s series finale begins at 6:05 p.m.

Jarrett was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2017 after starring in college at Charlotte. The O’s picked him in the 28th round.
