NEWTON – Newton-Conover High’s Shamar Baker is a repeat winner of the WNNC Oldies 101.3 FM Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award winner, giving a Red Devils player the award for a third straight week.

Baker, a 6-foot, 180-pound junior quarterback led Newton-Conover’s 58-8 home win over West Lincoln last Friday night with five touchdowns in a South Fork 2A game.

He threw for 183 yards and four TDs and ran four times for 48 yards and a TD and added three two-point conversions while playing just three quarters.

Baker is the first back-to-back winner of the award since Maiden’s Tommy Henry in 2006.

A week earlier, he accounted for 306 yards of total offense as Newton-Conover beat Bandys 55-7 at Bandys in a South Fork 2A football game.

He ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 127 yards and two scores as the Red Devils scored on seven of their nine possessions.

The award, in its 36th year, is presented each week after area head football coaches nominate players for consideration.

The Red Devils (6-1, 3-0) have a league game Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Norman Charter.
