NEWTON – Hickory High quarterback Derrien Phillips, who led the Red Tornadoes to a victory at Hunter Huss last Friday night, is this week’s WNNC Oldies 101.3 FM Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award winner.
Phillips, a 6-foot, 175-pound senior, sparked a come-from behind 28-27 victory that gave Russell Stone his first win as head coach of the Red Tornadoes.
After Hickory fell behind 19-0, Phillips guided the offense to four scores. His last — a 15-yard scoring pass to Jaekwon Staton, plus the game-winning two-point conversion run – improved the Red Tornadoes to 1-2.
Phillips, who had 87 rushing yards on 14 carries, also threw another TD pass to Staton and one to Antonio Parks and finished with 22 completions in 41 attempts with one interception and 264 yards.
Phillips is the fourth area player to win the Golden Helmet this season (see list for others).
The award, in its 36th year, is presented each week after area head football coaches nominate players for consideration.
Hickory’s next game is Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Bandys, and the game will be broadcast live on WNNC Oldies 101.3 FM.
