NEWTON – Keygan Mayfield, whose return to the Maiden High football lineup featured nearly 300 yards of total offense, is the Week 1 winner of the WNNC Oldies 101.3 FM Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award.
Mayfield, a senior quarterback, completed 21 of 27 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns, rushed eight times for 104 yards and two scores and intercepted a pass on defense in the Blue Devils’ 37-14 victory last Friday night over Fred T. Foard at Foard.
Mayfield played varsity football for Maiden as a sophomore and played his junior season at Davidson Day.
Mayfield’s next game is Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when the Blue Devils (1-0) entertain East Burke (0-1).
This is the 36th year for the Golden Helmet award, given to the most outstanding high school football player in the area each week after head coaches nominate players.
The weekly winner is announced during the Wacky Wakeup Crew broadcast each Tuesday morning throughout the season.
