LENOIR – Unbeaten Hibriten High knocked off visiting Shelby — which had won four consecutive state football championships — 19-7 on Friday night to win the West 2AA title.

The second-seeded Panthers (15-0) won their first West football title and will face the East’s top seed, East Duplin (15-0), in a state title game next Saturday at North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium.

East Duplin advanced by beating No. 2 North Davidson 38-28 on Friday night in the East 2AA title game at East Duplin.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has announced game sites by classification but has not yet set kickoff times for any of the state championship games.

A year after falling to South Point in a West 3A final, Hibriten won the Northwestern Foothills 2A title after moving down a class as part of statewide realignment leading into the 2017-18 school year.
