SOUTH FORK 2A ROUNDUP: Bandys, W. Lincoln among baseball winners as league play begins

Ivan Huffman drove in two runs and Alex Reaves held visiting Lake Norman Charter two hits over four innings on Tuesday night, leading Bandys High to a 4-3 baseball win in a South Fork 2A opener.

The Trojans scored three runs in the third inning, wiping out Lake Norman’s one-run lead, and Reaves had six strikeouts and walked five before giving way to reliever Brycen Turcotte.

Turcotte gave up one hit and two unearned runs over the final three innings as the Trojans improved to 2-0.

Peyton Laney had a double and Charlie Stybroski doubled and walked for Bandys, which had four hits and survived making four errors and leaving 11 baserunners stranded.

The Knights had three hits, made two errors and left seven men on base.

Lake Norman Charter starter Logan Ansted took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings (three hits, four runs but none earned, five strikeouts and six walks).

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Lake Norman Charter but the schools traded playing dates. The return game will be March 29 in Huntersville.

In a poll of South Fork 2A head coaches by The Gaston Gazette, Bandys and Lake Norman Charter were projected to finish 2-3, respectively, in the standings.

West Lincoln 6, East Lincoln 2

A five-run third inning was key as the Rebels won their conference opener on the road.

Chris Moxley pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks for West Lincoln. He threw strikes on 60 of his 100 pitches.

Samuel Duncan had two hits for the Rebels.

Ty Cobb took the loss for East Lincoln, pitching 4 1/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and six runs (three earned) and struck out three.

East Lincoln is at home Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Forestview while West Lincoln will face Lake Norman Charter on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a league game moved up by one day because of the weather.

In order to play Lake Norman Charter, the Rebels moved a home game scheduled against Statesville on Thursday to April 10.

North Lincoln 10, Lincolnton 0, 5 inn.

The Knights had seven runs in the second inning at home, cruising to a win that opened defense of their South Fork 2A title.

Josh Allen struck out five over four innings and Jake Soorus and Jake Quillen each had two hits for North Lincoln.

North Lincoln plays at Bandys on Friday at 7 p.m.

Maiden 19, Newton-Conover 8

The Blue Devils started a 12-game stretch of road games by blasting the Red Devils.

No other game details were available.

Maiden is playing away games to start the season while waiting for repairs on its baseball field, which has an flooded area in the outfield.

The Blue Devils’ next game is Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at South Rowan, and the Red Devils have moved their Friday game at home against East Lincoln (7 p.m.) to the same start time on Thursday.

SOFTBALL

North Lincoln 22, Lincolnton 0, 3 inn.

The Knights had six players with two or more hits and six with two or more RBIs as they hammered the visiting Wolves to open South Fork 2A play.

Morgan McCaslin’s three hits led North Lincoln, which had 21 hits and led 4-0 after one inning, 12-0 after two and then scored 10 runs in the third inning. She drove in three runs.

Brianna Broome, Audrey Stump, McKayla Watts, Flannery McFadden and Brooklyn Harris each drove in two runs for North Lincoln.
The Knights are at home Wednesday at 6 p.m. to face Fred T. Foard, and the Wolves are at home on Friday at 5 p.m. against Maiden.

Bandys 13, Lake Norman Charter 1

Kaitlyn Britton had three hits, including a home run, and Ashtyn Hopson hit a home run and drove in three runs as the Trojans (1-0) won a South Fork 2A opener at Lake Norman Charter.

Bandys had 12 hits and was helped by four Knights errors.

The Trojans scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the sixth.

Annie Andrews had two RBIs, Riley Fox two hits and Samantha Browning added two hits and two RBIs for Bandys.

Lydia Poovey worked four innings, striking out seven, to gain a win for the Trojans.

Bandys plays a non-league game at North Gaston at 6 p.m. on Wednesday while Lake Norman Charter is at home on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Christ The King.

East Lincoln 9, West Lincoln 0

Payton Baker checked the visiting Rebels on one hit and Katelynn Crowe hit a home run as the Mustangs opened conference play with a home win.

Crowe drove in two runs with Kyle Thress adding a double and a triple and two RBIs for East Lincoln and Katie Hogue going 3-for-3.

GIRLS SOCCER

Maiden 2, St. Stephens 1

Shelby Pettit and Gracie Arrowood each had a goal and Marley Mingus made 11 saves, sparking the Blue Devils’ home victory.

Brittny Cabalceta and Providence Reed each had an assist for Maiden.

Postponements

Bandys’ match at Draughn was postponed and rescheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
