Maiden’s Ikard throws five-inning no-hitter in softball

Maiden High, playing its fifth straight road game, won again Thursday night to continue atop the South Fork 2A baseball standings.

The Blue Devils beat West Lincoln 4-2 behind the pitching of Ross Fowler, who went 6 2/3 innings, gave up four hits and two unearned runs, walked two and struck out four. He threw 103 pitches, 66 of them for strikes.

Maiden is off to a 4-1 overall start and is 4-0 in the South Fork 2A under Doug McRee, who returned to coaching varsity baseball this year (he previously coached Bandys for 16 seasons).

Dalton James had a double and scored a run and Dylan Abernathy, Carlos Reynoso and Austin Hoyle each singled in a run for Maiden.

The Blue Devils scored all of their runs in the fourth inning, and the Rebels (4-2, 2-2) scored their two runs in the fifth inning.

West Lincoln made three errors.

The Rebels had seven hits, two by Dylan Smith, and Chris Moxley had a double.

Kelton Towery took the loss after going 3 2/3 innings, giving up three hits, four runs (all earned) with four walks and two strikeouts.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday but moved up on day by the weather forecast for Friday.

Maiden is playing all of its games on the road while its flooded outfield is being repaired.

The Blue Devils’ next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Lake Norman Charter.

West Lincoln battles Newton-Conover on the road on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Bandys 14, Newton-Conover 0, 5 inn.

The Trojans scored 13 runs in the fourth inning en route to a conference win in Newton.

Ivan Huffman drove in four runs, Hunter Jones and Sal Ferraro each had two hits and two RBIs and Elec Yount drove in two runs for Bandys (4-1, 3-1).

The Trojans had 11 hits and their pitching limited the Red Devils (0-6, 0-4) to three hits.

Cy Spencer was the winning pitcher for Bandys. He threw four innings, allowing three hits and he struck out three. Peyton Laney pitched the final inning for the Trojans.

The game was originally set for Friday and moved up one day by the weather forecast.

Bandys’ next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home against Lincolnton while the Red Devils will face West Lincoln at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Newton.

East Lincoln 15, Lincolnton 5, 5 inn.

Ethan Martin got his first varsity win as the Mustangs (4-2, 3-1) won a league game at Lincolnton (1-4, 1-3).

East Lincoln, after scoring only two runs in its first three games, has scored 26 in its last two.

Garrett Michel went 3-for-3 with a walk, scored four runs and drove in two to spark the Mustangs.

Josh Stephens had two hits, walked twice and hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for East Lincoln, with Graham Smiley collecting two hits and two RBIs and Bradley Burleson driving in two runs.

Martin went four innings, allowing three hits and two runs and struck out three.

East Lincoln is at home Tuesday at 7 p.m., facing North Lincoln in a league game, while Lincolnton will be at Bandys on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. first pitch.

SOFTBALL

Maiden 12, North Iredell 0, 5 inn.

Addy Ikard threw five innings, allowing no hits, walking three and striking out two as the Bue Devils won a non-conference game at home.

Laura Morgan went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs for Maiden, Jaiden Kiser had two hits and scored twice and Caitlyn Wray had one hit, walked once, was hit by a pitch, drove in a run and scored three runs.

The Blue Devils are 3-1 overall heading into Friday’s home game against West Lincoln at 6 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Maiden 6, West Lincoln 0

Brittny Cabelceta had three goals to spark Maiden’s home conference win.

Gracie Arrowood added one goal and three assists, Kassi Kiziah had one goal and one assist and Emma Yandle scored a goal for the Blue Devils (3-0-1, 2-0).

Maiden’s first goal came with three seconds left in the opening half and the other five were second-half scores, including Cabelceta via a throw-in and off a corner kick.

Rachel Morris and Marisa Yandle each provided an assist for Maiden while Marley Mingus was in goal for the Blue Devils’ first shutout of the season.

West Lincoln dipped to 0-4, 0-2.

Maiden goes to Lake Norman Charter on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. league match, and the Rebels have a 5 p.m. conference match with Newton-Conover on the road on Tuesday.

BOYS GOLF

Lake Norman Charter wins at Verdict Ridge

Lake Norman Charter shot 159 at Verdict Ridge to win a conference match by four strokes over East Lincoln on Wednesday.

Ramsey Coltrane of West Lincoln was medalist of a nine-hole match with a 35 and East Lincoln’s Lance Rowe and Drew Coppin were next with 38s.

Jace Arko’s 39 led Lake Norman Charter, which had five players in the top10 individual scores.

The next conference match is scheduled Monday at River Run (18 holes).
