Unbeaten South Caldwell snaps Maiden’s 5-game baseball win streak

Brandon Webster scored six goals on Wednesday night, leading Lake Norman Charter High to a 17-5 victory at home over Pine Lake Prep in boys’ lacrosse.

The Knights improved to 4-3 and they’ll play Community School of Davidson on Friday at 7 p.m. at Lake Norman Charter.

BASEBALL

South Caldwell 9, Maiden 8

The Spartans won a non-conference game at home to stay undefeated (9-0) and snap Maiden’s win streak at five games.

Colby Collins pitched four innings to gain a win, allowing four hits and three runs and striking out seven.

Carlos Reynoso took the loss for Maiden (5-2), allowing 10 hits and nine earned runs over three innings.

Curtis Massagee, Ian Moretz and Clay Canale each had two hits for South Caldwell.

Reynoso had a double among his two hits and drove in two runs for the Blue Devils while Bain Sipe went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run and Dylan Abernethy had two hits, walked and scored a run and Avery Scott had two hits for Maiden.

Maiden plays a South Fork 2A game at North Lincoln on Friday at 7 p.m., and the Spartans are at West Caldwell on Friday at 6 p.m. in a Northwestern 3A-4A game.

Bandys 14, St. Stephens 8

Elec Yount had a double among his two hits, walked once and drove in three runs as the Trojans (6-1) ran their win streak to three games with a non-conference win at St. Stephens.

Sal Ferraro went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Charlie Stybroski had two hits and drove in two runs for Bandys, which scored more than 10 runs for the third straight game and for the fourth time this season.

Owen Van Sickle had a hit and two RBIs for the Indians (3-5).

Nick Andrews pitched four innings, allowing three hits, six runs (all earned) with five walks and four strikeouts to gain a win for Bandys.

Julien Pessell took the loss for St. Stephens, which dropped its fourth straight game and gave up a season-high 14 runs. He threw four innings, allowing 10 hits, eight runs (seven earned) with three walks and two strikeouts.

Bandys is at home Friday at 7 p.m for a South Fork 2A game against East Lincoln.

The Indians play a Northwestern 3A-4A game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Watauga.

West Lincoln 1, Cherryville 0

The Rebels (6-2) scored the only run of a non-conference game in the fourth inning to nip the host Ironmen.

Each team had three hits and West Lincoln made two errors and the Ironmen made three.

Chandler Carpenter had the game-winning RBI for the Rebels. He had one hit, as did Dylan Smithy and Brandon Lail.

Dalton Pence, Austin Hamrick and Elliott Greene each had a hit for Cherryville (7-2), which had a five-game win streak snapped.

Smith, pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief, got a win for the Rebels. He gave up two hits, no runs, walked one and struck out three.

Brent Walls, the starter for the Ironmen, took the loss after going four innings. He gave up two hits, one run, walked none and struck out three.

West Lincoln plays a South Fork 2A game at Lincolnton on Friday at 7 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Bandys 8, St. Stephens 6

The Trojans had a five-run third inning en route to a road non-conference win that improved their record to 4-5.

Bailey Burton and Samantha Browning each drove in two runs for Bandys and Annie Andrews had two of the Trojans’ eight hits.

St. Stephens (1-7) had seven hits, two by Sophie Hainor, and Mayson Lail, Alyssa Howard and Lauren Moser each drove in a run for the Indians.

Freshman Laura Drum was the winning pitcher for Bandys, pitching four innings. She gave up four hits, four runs (two earned), walked four and struck out four.

Lail threw a complete game for the Indians, going six innings. She gave up eight runs (five earned) with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Bandys is at home on Friday at 6 p.m. to play East Lincoln in a South Fork 2A game while the Indians go to Boone on Friday (5 p.m.) for a Northwestern 3A-4A game against Watauga.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Stephens 5, Maiden 1

Rachel Morris scored Maiden’s only goal and Marley Mingus made seven saves in a non-conference loss at St. Stephens.

The Indians have a Northwestern 3A-4A match at Watauga on Friday at 5 p.m.

Maiden battles North Lincoln at Maiden on Thursday in a South Fork 2A match.
