MATTHEWS – Top-seeded Weddington High dominated visiting Watauga on Friday night, winning 49-14 to take the West 3AA football title.
Weddington (15-0) will face East No. 1 seed Lee County (15-0) for a state title on Saturday at N.C. State at a time to be announced.
Lee County advanced with a 24-9 home victory over Wilmington New Hanover.
Watauga, seeded No. 2 after winning a Northwestern 3A-4A title, finished 13-2.
The Pioneers were trying to win on Friday and get to a state football title game for the first time since 1978 when they won the state 3A championship.,
