Foard wins at Hibriten to move into first place in baseball

Payton Bryant threw a two-hitter, striking out nine, as Bunker Hill High nipped Draughn 4-0 on Tuesday at Bunker Hill to move into first place in Northwestern Foothills 2A softball.

The Bears (5-1, 4-1) are a half-game in front of Fred T. Foard in the conference race.

Bryant threw six innings and walked only one and the Bears had eight hits.

Bunker Hill scored three runs in the third inning and another in the fourth inning.

Lillie Pennington went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in the third inning with a two-out double. Addie Wray’s hit in the fourth inning scored Grace Pennington.

Kylee Hosuer added two hits for Bunker Hill.

Hibriten 4, Fred T. Foard 3

The host Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to win a league game and knock the Tigers out of first place.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning and Hibriten scored in the fourth for a 2-1 lead.

Foard tied it at 2 with a run in the sixth inning and went up 3-2 with a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Kyndell Warren had two hits for the Panthers, who had eighth, and Jillian Jones was the winning pitcher. Jones threw seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs with no walks and five strikeouts.

Hibriten has a non-league game at West Caldwell on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and Foard is at home for a non-conference game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Charlotte Catholic.

East Burke 14, Patton 10, 8 inn.

Ashlyn Stilwell had two hits, one a home run, and drove in two runs and Love Tallent went 4-for-5 and scored twice as the Cavs won a league game on the road.

Lexi Seagle had two hits and drove in a run and gained a save for the Cavs.

Stilwell was the winning pitcher.

East Burke improved to 1-2 in the conference and Patton dropped to 0-5.

The Cavs are at home Thursday at 6 p.m., playing Burns in a non-conference game.

The Panthers go to West Iredell on Friday at 6 p.m. for a league game.

Bunker Hill 6, East Burke 0 (Monday)

The Bears jumped to a 4-0 lead after two innings en route to a conference win on the road.

Bunker Hill had 12 hits and limited the Cavs to five.

Bryant had five strikeouts as the winning pitcher while Wray went 3-for-4 with doubles, Camyrn Bryant went 3-for-3 with a double and a solo home run in the fifth inning and Houser hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.

BASEBALL

Fred T. Foard 11, Hibriten 5

The Tigers took over first place in the conference with a victory on the road.

Foard (4-2, 4-1) is a half-game in front of the Panthers (6-3, 3-1).

The Tigers had an early 2-0 lead but Hibriten tied it with run-scoring hits with two outs.

Peyton Hemphill’s hit gave Foard a 3-2 lead and the Tigers stretched that to 5-2 before the Panthers scored three runs for a 5-all tie. Jack Stevens tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly in that inning.

Foard scored three runs over the next two innings to win.

Luke Absher took the loss for Hibriten and Dakota London got a win in relief of Jeremiah Wike for the Tigers.

Foard plays a non-league game at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Newton-Conover.

Hibriten travels to Draughn for a league game on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Patton 18, East Burke 1, 5 inn.

Adrian Hamilton drove in four runs and Patton limited the visiting Cavs to three hits in a conference win.

The Panthers (3-5, 2-3) had eight hits and Bryson Ratliff, Peyton Smith and Zach Smith each drove in two runs.

Patton had a five-run first inning and scored seven runs in the fourth inning.

Smith was the winning pitcher, going three innings. He allowed three hits, one run, walked none and struck out eight.

Emery Propst, Ryan Isbell and Dalton Teague had one hit each for East Burke (0-7, 0-4).

Blaine Fulbright took the loss after going one inning. He gave up one hit, four runs (all earned) with three walks and one strikeout.

Patton goes to West Iredell for a league game on Friday at 7 p.m., and East Burke meets non-conference rival Freedom on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Morganton.

Bunker Hill 6, Draughn 0

Sophomore Clayton Chapman allowed only three hits over 6 1/3 innings as the Bears shut out the Wildcats in a conference game in Claremont.

Chapman walked four and struck out nine as Bunker Hill (4-3, 2-2) evened its conference record.

Seth Moore scored three runs, Seth Pennington had two hits and two RBIs and Carson Sigmon added two hits for the Bears, who had seven hits.

Draughn’s Mason Mozeley had two hits and Gabe Strickland took a loss after going five innings (seven hits, four runs but none earned, three walks, four strikeouts).

Bunker Hill faces East Burke on Friday at 7 p.m. in a league game that will be played at Shuey Field in Morganton.

Draughn goes to West Caldwell on Wednesday (6 p.m.) for a non-conference game.

GIRLS SOCCER

Fred T. Foard 4, Hibriten 0

Abby Walker scored three goals and Alexis Woglemuth had seven saves as the Tigers won on the road to stay in first place.

Allison Kerley had the other goal for Foard (6-2-1, 3-0), the only other unbeaten team in league play other than West Iredell (1-0-0).

Rachel Easton made 12 saves for Hibriten (3-3-0, 1-1-0).

Foard plays Newton-Conover in a non-conference match at Newton-Conover on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and the Panthers play a league match at Draughn on Friday at 6 p.m.

BOYS GOLF

Draughn wins by 4 strokes (Monday)

Draughn shot a 332, led by Ben Leonard’s 79, to nip Fred T. Foard by four strokes in a conference match at Cedar Rock Country Club.

Maddox Whittington of Hibriten was medalist with a 75, helping the Panthers shoot 352 and finish fourth.

Draughn is five strokes up on Fred T. Foard (1,025-1,030) after three conference matches this season.
