NORTHWESTERN 3A-4A ROUNDUP: Freedom’s Holland shuts down Red Tornadoes

Lyle Holland threw a complete game, allowing two hits and striking out nine, as Freedom High topped Hickory 3-0 on Wednesday night in a Northwestern 3A-4A baseball game.

Zac Smith had both of the Red Tornadoes’ hits.

William Stewart took the loss for Hickory, giving up four hits and striking out three in a relief role.

Freedom (2-1, 1-0) plays a league game at home on Thursday (4 p.m.) against West Caldwell and will play Patton at Freedom in a non-league game on Friday.

Hickory (2-1, 0-1) will play archrival St. Stephens on the road at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

McDowell 12, R-S Central 6

Gage Gentry had two hits and drove in five runs as the Titans won a non-conference game at home.

Ethan Hamm added two hits and two RBIs and Brycen Seymore had two hits and drove in three runs for McDowell.

The Titans survived issuing 10 walks with reliever Billy Cessna pitching 1 1/3 inning and getting a win.

The game was tied at 4 until the Titans scored three runs in the fourth inning. They added two in the fifth inning and three in the sixth inning.

McDowell battles South Caldwell on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Marion.

Bunker Hill 3, St. Stephens 2

The Bears got the winning run in the fifth inning – on a wild pitch – to collect the first win for Todd Setzer as their head coach.

Setzer replaced Marty Curtis, who retired after 35 years as head coach at Bunker Hill.

Bunker Hill’s Thaxton Isenhour singled in the fifth inning with one out and stole second base. He moved to third on Seth Moore’s infield hit and then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Isenhour went 2-for-3 for the Bears (1-2), who had five hits, and the Indians had three hits.

Seth Moore went six innings and got a win, giving up three hits, two runs (both earned), walking five and striking out six. Seth Pennington closed, pitching one inning, and gained a save.

St. Stephens starter Julien Peissel took the loss. He gave up five hits and three runs (one earned), walked none and struck out four.

The Indians (2-1) scored their runs in the first inning when Matt Walker walked, stole second base, and advanced on a single by Jake Speaks. Walker scored on a single by Josh Kidd and Speaks scored on a wild pitch.

The Bears got two runs in the third to tie it. Christyan Murry singled, Isenhour reached on an infield error and a throwing error at third base scored Murry. Carson Sigmon’s ground out scored Isenhour, making it 2-2.

Bunker Hill plays another non-league game on Thursday at 7 p.m., going to Bandys.

St. Stephens is at home on Thursday (6:30 p.m.) for a Northwesterm 3A-4A game against Hickory.

Trio of league games moved up one day

Due to a Friday forecast for rain, three conference baseball games have been moved up to Thursday — Hickory at St. Stephens at 6:30 p.m., West Caldwell at Freedom at 4 p.m. and Watauga at Alexander Central at 4:30 pm.

The softball games (same schedule) moved up are West Caldwell at Freedom and Watauga at Alexander Central.
