ALL-NORTHWESTERN 3A-4A: Hickory leads girls’ soccer, West Caldwell tops in golf

Hickory High won three of the four top individual awards in Northwestern 3A-4A girls’ soccer after sharing the regular season title with Watauga.

In voting by conference head coaches, the Red Tornadoes’ Izzi Wood was named the league’s top players, Lauren Hayes was voted the top defensive player in the league and Brian Jillings took Coach of the Year.

The Offensive Player of the Year award went to Lily Suyao of Watauga.

Hickory and Watauga, splitting their regular season matches, went 13-1-0 in the conference to share the title.

Hickory led selections of 33 all-league players with 10 and Watauga had nine.

The Red Tornadoes were eliminated in the second round of the state 3A playoffs by A.C. Reynolds.

The Pioneers reached the third round and fell to No. 5 Northern Guilford.

BOYS GOLF

Warriors win league title, lead all-conference

West Caldwell, after winning the conference title by 158 strokes over second-place Alexander Central, leads voting for all-conference.

The Warriors’ Noah Bumgarner was selected as the player of the year and his coach, Kevin Abee, was picked as Coach of the Year.

West Caldwell had five all-league golfers with Alexander Central and Freedom each having three.
