OTHER AREA PLAYERS

HUNTER HARVEY (Class AA Bowie, Md.)

HARVEY

Former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey remains in Florida as he recovers from a shoulder injury sustained while trying to maneuver away from a foul ball into the dugout on a day he was not pitching.

When he twisted to avoid being struck by the ball, his right shoulder popped out of socket.

Harvey, a right-hander, is now throwing some and is expected to pitch in a game in Florida on Aug. 4.

He was scratched from his 10th start (June 8), and he is on the Baltimore Orioles’ 40-man roster. If he were to go on the 60-day disabled list — which is not anticipated — he would be considered on the major league roster during that time.

Harvey is 1-2 with 32 1/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 36 hits, 20 runs (all earned), walked eight and struck out 30. His ERA is 5.57.

Bowie finished last in the first-half West Division of the Eastern League, 8 ½ games back of division winner Akron (Ohio).

Bowie beat Reading (Pa.) 7-5 on the road on Thursday night before 5,571, improving to 40-48 overall in the Eastern League.

ZACH JARRETT (Class A Delmarva, Md.)

JARRETT

Zach Jarrett — who starred in high school at Hickory and in college at Charlotte – went 1-for-5 and scored a run on Thursday night as Delmarva won 11-6 at Charleston (S.C.) before 4,207.

He started in right field and batted third in the lineup, with his night dropping his batting average below .300 at .299. There are five SAL players hitting .300 or better, and Jarrett’s sixth in batting average in the league.

Jarrett also made a big defensive play in the victory (see link to video below).

In 84 games this season, Jarrett also has 19 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 48 RBIs. He’s hitting .222 with one home run and four RBIs in his last 10 games.

Jarrett is closing in on becoming the third player this season to reach 100 hits in the SAL (96, third behind Riley Delgado’s 102 for Rome, Ga., and 101 by Chad Spanberger of Asheville). He has 11 home runs and 22 SAL players have hit at least 10 (Seuly Matias of Lexington, Ky., leads with 26).

Delmarva improved to 48-40 and 13-8 in the second half in the SAL Northern Division standings.

HAYDEN DEAL (Class A Rome, Ga.)

Hayden Deal, a star at Bandys High who played college baseball at Presbyterian, did not pitch on Thursday night when Rome’s game at Greenville (S.C.) was halted by rain in the top of the second inning tied at 0-0.

The Braves will make up that game on Friday at 4 p.m. before playing a regularly scheduled game against Greenville.

Deal’s last start came last Sunday when he threw six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four in a game that Augusta (Ga.) eventually won 4-0.

He threw 80 pitches, 52 for strikes, and got 13 groundball outs while facing 21 batters.

Deal is 4-1 with an ERA of 1.98, pitching 50 innings this season. Deal has hit four batters, intentionally walked one and walked nine to go with 55 strikeouts.

In his last 10 outings, he is 1-1 with an ERA of 1.87, pitching 33 2/3 innings with six walks and 30 strikeouts.

The Braves are 47-42 overall and 7-13 in the second-half SAL Southern Division standings. They won a first-half title, securing a postseason berth.
