ZACH JARRETT (Class A Delmarva, Md.)

Zach Jarrett — a former star at Hickory High and in college at Charlotte – went 2-for-4 on Saturday night as Delmarva edged host Kannapolis 5-2 before 1,502.

He started in leftfield, batting third in the Shorebirds’ order, and moved to centerfield late in the game.

In 97 games this season, Jarrett is hitting .291 with 19 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 54 RBIs. He is hitting .211 with no home runs and six RBIs in his last 10 games.

Jarrett has 108 hits, second-best in the SAL behind Bret Boswell of Asheville (109). The previous leader (with 110 hits) was Chad Spanberger of Asheville, who now plays for Class A Lansing, Mich., after being part of Colorado’s trade with Toronto this week.

Delmarva is 54-47 and 19-15 in the second half in the SAL Northern Division standings and in third place.

HAYDEN DEAL (Class A Rome, Ga.)

DEAL

Lexington (Ky.) beat visiting Rome 4-2 on Saturday night before 7,790 but former Bandys High left-hander Hayden Deal did not pitch.

In his most recent outing on Thursday night, Deal didn’t get a decision in a 14-5 victory by Rome over visiting Columbia (S.C.). He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (four earned), walking one and striking out seven.

Deal is 5-1 with an ERA of 2.30 in 21 appearances this season, pitching 62 2/3 innings. He’s hit four batters, intentionally walked one and walked 11 to go with 69 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .207 against him this season.

In his last 10 outings, he’s 1-1 with an ERA of 2.58, pitching 38 1/3 innings with four walks and 34 strikeouts.

Deal is four strikeouts away from 100 in his pro career with 96 in 93 1/3 innings.

The Braves are 57-48 overall and 17-19 in the second-half SAL Southern Division standings.

Rome won a first-half title, securing a postseason berth.

HUNTER HARVEY (Class AA Bowie, Md.)

Former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey is recoving from a shoulder injury sustained while trying to maneuver away from a foul ball into the dugout on a day he was not pitching.

When he twisted to avoid being struck by the ball, his right shoulder popped out of socket.

Harvey is now throwing some and is expected to pitch in a game in Florida on Aug. 4.

He was scratched from his 10th start (June 8).

Harvey is 1-2 with 32 1/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 36 hits, 20 runs (all earned), walked eight and struck out 30. His ERA is 5.57.

Bowie finished last in the first-half West Division of the Eastern League, 8 ½ games back of division winner Akron (Ohio).

The Baysox won 9-2 on Saturday night at Harrisburg (Pa.) before 5,631, improving to 48-55 overall in the Eastern League.

UPDATE

Former Lenoir-Rhyne University players Justin Dean (outfield) and Landon Whitson (relief pitcher) are in the minor leagues, Dean with the Danville (Va.) Braves (Atlanta) and Whitson with Missoula Opsrey (Mont.) in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ system.

Through 30 games, Dean was hitting .310 with eight doubles, four triples, one home run and 14 RBIs.

Whitson is 0-0 through 10 appearances. He’s thrown 19 innings, walked seven, struck out 17 and allowed 12 runs (seven earned).

Also, no updates or team assignments have yet been posted on Catawba Valley Community College pitcher Julian Smith, drafted and signed the the Los Angeles Dodgers or Alexander Central High pitcher Zach Hammer, drafted and signed by the New York Mets.
