HAYDEN DEAL (Class A Rome, Ga.)

Former Bandys High left-hander Hayden Deal made his fifth start of the season on Thursday night but did not get a decision in a 14-5 victory by Rome over visiting Columbia (S.C.) before 3,327.

Deal had not pitched since last Sunday’s one-inning relief stint in Rome against Charleston (S.C.)

He went 4 2/3 innings on Thursday night, allowing seven hits, five runs (four earned), walking one and striking out seven.

Deal threw 61 of his 88 pitches for strikes and faced 22 batters, exiting in the fifth inning with two outs and two runners on (Tyler Watson came in).

Deal is 5-1 with an ERA of 2.30 in 21 appearances this season, pitching 62 2/3 innings. He’s hit four batters, intentionally walked one and walked 11 to go with 69 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .207 against him this season.

In his last 10 outings, he’s 1-1 with an ERA of 2.58, pitching 38 1/3 innings with four walks and 34 strikeouts.

Deal is four strikeouts away from 100 in his pro career with 96 in 93 1/3 innings.

The Braves are 56-47 overall and 16-18 in the second-half SAL Southern Division standings.

Rome won a first-half title, securing a postseason berth.

ZACH JARRETT (Class A Delmarva, Md.)

Zach Jarrett — a former star at Hickory High and in college at Charlotte – did not have a hit on Thursday as Delmarva got a game in for the first time since last Sunday, losing 1-0 and 5-3 in seven-inning games at Hagerstown (Md.) before 1,488.

All of the Shorebirds’ games were rained out on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Thursday night, Jarrett started in left field and batted third in the first game and went 0-for-3. In the second game, he started in right field, batted third in the order, and struck out twice while going 0-for-3.

In 95 games this season, Jarrett is hitting .287 with 19 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs and 54 RBIs. He’s hitting .162 with no home runs or RBIs in his last 10 games.

Jarrett has 104 hits, third-best in the SAL behind Bret Boswell of Asheville (107) and Chad Spanberger of Asheville (110).

Jarrett is one of 18 players in the league with 10 or more home runs, and Seuly Matias of Lexington (Ky.) leads with 29.

Delmarva is 53-46 and 18-14 in the second half in the SAL Northern Division standings.

The Shorebirds are in third place, a half-game back of Hickory in the second half standings and 2 ½ games back of Lakewood, N.J.

HARVEY

HUNTER HARVEY (Class AA Bowie, Md.)

Former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey is recoving from a shoulder injury sustained while trying to maneuver away from a foul ball into the dugout on a day he was not pitching.

When he twisted to avoid being struck by the ball, his right shoulder popped out of socket.

Harvey is now throwing some and is expected to pitch in a game in Florida on Aug. 4.

He was scratched from his 10th start (June 8).

Harvey is 1-2 with 32 1/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 36 hits, 20 runs (all earned), walked eight and struck out 30. His ERA is 5.57.

Bowie finished last in the first-half West Division of the Eastern League, 8 ½ games back of division winner Akron (Ohio).

The Baysox were rained out Thursday night in Harrisburg (Pa.) and their game scheduled Friday there has also been postponed. The teams play Saturday night and then a doubleheader on Sunday.

Bowie is 47-55 overall in the Eastern League and in last place, 13 ½ games behind league-leading Akron (Ohio).
