OTHER AREA PLAYERS

HARVEY

HUNTER HARVEY (Class AA Bowie, Md. Baysox)

After being optioned to Triple A Norfolk (Va.) during spring training with the Baltimore Orioles, former Bandys High star Hunter Harvey is now active and on the opening day roster for Class AA Bowie, Md., in the Eastern League.

That’s where Harvey, 24, pitched last season until sustaining a shoulder injury when he tried to dodge a foul ball that came into the dugout on a night he was not pitching.

Bowie’s game on Saturday at Harrisburg was rained out and the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at 4 p.m. Harvey is listed as the probable starter for the Baysox in the second game.

Harvey didn’t pitch after June 2 of last season and went 1-2 with a 5.57 ERA in nine starts, pitching 32 1/3 innings, walking nine and striking out 30.

Earlier in the season, the Orioles called Harvey to the big leagues for two games but he did not pitch before being optioned back to Bowie.

Harvey — starting his sixth year in the minor leagues after being a first-round draft pick in 2013 — saw limited action in 2016 after having Tommy John surgery.

After five pro seasons, Harvey is 8-10 with an ERA of 3.11 with 47 appearances (all starts) and 176 2/3 innings pitched. Opponents have hit .226 against Harvey and he has walked 60 and struck out 217.

JARRETT

ZACH JARRETT

(Class A Advanced,

Fredrick, Va. Keys)

Former Hickory High and Charlotte star Zach Jarrett is an outfielder on the Fredrick (Va.) Keys roster and started in left field and batted fourth in the lineup in a season-opening game at Winston-Salem won 9-4 by the Dash on Thursday night.

Jarrett went 0-for-4 and scored a run, striking out three times and leaving four base runners stranded.

Fredrick’s home game on Friday night against Winston-Salem was rained out and they’ll play a doubleheader on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start with the series finale is Sunday at 1 p.m.

Jarrett is in his third pro season, playing first at Aberdeen (Md.) and then in 129 games last season at Class A Delmarva (Md.), where he hit .277 with 26 doubles, six triples and 14 home runs. He drove in 72 runs, walked 41 times and struck out 136 times and was a South Atlantic League (SAL) All-Star.

(Class A Advanced Florida Fire Frogs)

Deal did not pitch on Friday when Florida defeated Daytona Beach (Fla.) 5-4 on the road.

The Fire Frogs face the Tortugas on Saturday at 6 p.m. and on Sunday at noon in Kissimmee.

Deal is in his third pro season after signing with the Braves after a morning tryout at Bandys, and he pitched in college at Presbyterian.

In Rome (Ga.) last season, Deal went 9-1 with an ERA of 2.17 in 27 games (five starts), earning two saves and pitching 78 2/3 innings. He walked 17 and struck out 82.
