WINGATE – Union County opened a five-run lead and won 5-3 over visiting Maiden Post 240 on Wednesday night at Wingate University, pulling into a virtual tie for second place in the East Division of Area IV American Legion baseball.
Union County improved to 8-3, both overall and in the East Division, and dropped Maiden to 14-5 overall and 12-3 in the East.
Shelby is 14-1 overall and 13-1 in the East Division after sweeping Mint Hill on the road, 11-7 and 3-2, on Wednesday night.
Shelby, 1 1/2 games ahead of Maiden and 3 1/2 games in front of Union County, has four games to play.
Harry Bernard went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs to spark Union County past Maiden.
Union County led 1-0 through three innings before adding two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth inning for a 5-0 lead.
Maiden, which outhit Union County 6-4, scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Post 240 made two errors and Union County had none.
Josh Frye (Statesville Christian) drove in two runs and Grayeson Brown (Maiden) had an RBI for the Salamanders, who fell to 7-3 in road games this season. Jacob Cauble (Maiden) and Bryson Ledford (Maiden) had the other Post 240 hits.
Reliever Ross Fowler (Maiden) took the loss, pitching three innings. He gave up two hits, two runs (none earned), walked one and struck out one after replacing Salamanders starter T.J. Rasar (Bandys). Rasar pitched three innings, gave up two hits, three runs (all earned), walked five and struck out five.t D
Union County starter Reid Viar worked five innings to gain a win. He gave up two hitss, three runs (all earned), walked two and struck out two.
The Salamanders are idle on Thursday night before playing Shelby on Friday night (7 p.m.) at Maiden High. Maiden plays Gastonia on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Sims Park.
Post 240’s final regular-season home game against Huntersville has been moved up. Originally scheduled for Wednesday (July 4), head coach David Williams announced on Wednesday the game will now be played Monday at 7 p.m.
Maiden has a non-division makeup game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Cherryville.
The East Division has 10 teams and is playing an 18-game schedule, and the West Division has nine and is playing a 16-game schedule.
The regular season is scheduled to end on July 5, and the playoffs are scheduled to start July 7.
