HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Pushed to a fifth game, Maiden nips St. Stephens in volleyball

MAIDEN – Maiden High evened its volleyball record on Wednesday night by nipping visiting St. Stephens 3-2.

The Blue Devils rallied after falling in the third and four games to win 15-6 and even their record at 1-1.

Maiden won 29-27 and 25-19 before the Indians rebounded to win 27-25 and 25-19 to force a fifth and deciding game.

The Blue Devils, 20-6 a year ago, were pushed to five games five times last season and won only one of those matches.

On Wednesday, Abbey Smith led Maiden with 18 kills and three aces while Sarah Wicker added 16 kills, Abby Driscoll made 11 kills and three aces.

Leading the Blue Devils in assists was Faith Herman with 53 (she added five aces) and Lauren Xayavong had 37 digs.

Maiden’s next match, on Thursday, is at Bunker Hill at 6 p.m. while St. Stephens’ next match, also on Thursday, is at Statesville.

Tigers clarify date

Fred T. Foard’s athletic department clarified on Wednesday the Tigers’ scheduled volleyball match against Hickory.

It will be on Sept. 5 and be played at Hickory.
