Area baseball fans, one of the greatest high school pitchers to ever come out of the Greater Hickory area has suffered a setback — a broken bone in his pitching hand after being hit by a line drive in an exhibition game on Friday.

Bumgarner, 28, is entering his ninth major league season after being the No. 10 pick in the first round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by the Giants. He is 104-76 with an ERA of 3.01 in 234 career starts.

He went 4-9 last season, also facing an off-the-field injury that sidelined him.
